The Royal National Lifeboat Institute established its first base in Burnham in 1966, and since then its presence has become part of the fabric of everyday life in the town, weaving its threads through the lives of the families whose members have supported it over the years. Since 1996 the RNLI has been based in the north-west corner of the Yacht Harbour, a far cry from the old shed next to Petticrows Boatyard behind the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. In the early days the crew was summoned by the maroons and it was bicycles and muscle power to heave the lifeboat up the ramp and down to the river; these days it's pagers and hydraulics!

One thing, however, hasn't changed - the RNLI is still a voluntary organisation, relying on its crew to give their time and expertise and the public to give their support through the collecting tins and the many events organised to raise money. Please support the RNLI whenever you can; if you go afloat, you may have cause to need them one day!
